I grew up in the Philippines, where regular dental care was not accessible to my family due to financial limitations. Dental visits were not a routine part of life but something only sought in emergencies. As a result, oral health often took a back seat, not because it wasn’t important, but because it simply wasn’t affordable. Growing up in that environment gave me an early understanding of how closely oral health is tied to overall well-being, confidence, and quality of life. Those experiences stayed with me and ultimately shaped my decision to pursue a career in dental hygiene.
As a dental hygienist, the moments that inspire me most are often the quiet ones—when a patient feels safe enough to open up, ask questions, or admit their fears. One particularly memorable interaction involved a patient who had not seen a dental professional in many years due to anxiety and embarrassment. They were visibly nervous and hesitant at the start of the appointment. I took the time to listen, explain each step, and reassure them that they were in a judgment-free space. By the end of the visit, the patient expressed gratitude and shared that it was the first positive dental experience they had ever had. That moment reminded me that compassion, patience, and education can be just as impactful as clinical skills.
Community service and volunteer work have further deepened my passion for this profession. Participating in outreach events, free clinics, and dental buses has allowed me to serve individuals who may otherwise go without care. These experiences are especially meaningful because they reflect my own background and reinforce why access to dental care matters. Being able to educate patients, relieve discomfort, and restore dignity through oral health care is incredibly fulfilling.
What keeps me inspired and excited about my career is the opportunity to make a difference every single day. No two patients are the same, and each interaction brings a new opportunity to educate, advocate, and build trust. Dental hygiene allows me to combine science, service, and human connection in a way that feels purposeful and impactful.
I love dental hygiene because it allows me to turn my personal experiences into positive change. Through patient care, education, and community service, I am able to help others achieve healthier lives and renewed confidence—one patient, one moment, and one smile at a time.
