Every day I spend in dentistry reminds me why I chose to become a dental hygienist: the people. My patients are the ones who inspire me to keep going, even when school feels overwhelming or the days feel long. Seeing someone begin to enjoy their smile again, or simply enjoy a moment of self-care in the dental chair, fills me with a sense of purpose that nothing else ever has. There is a special kind of joy that comes from having a therapeutic hand in helping someone heal, feel comfortable, or feel seen. That connection is what motivates me to finish my dental hygiene program and continue building a career where I can help people fall in love with smiling again. Being able to create a space where people feel safe to take time for themselves is something I never take for granted. My patients show me, over and over, that this profession isn’t just clinical work—it’s human work.

One moment that has stayed with me happened just last week while I was working as a dental assistant, balancing my final six months of hygiene school. A patient came in looking completely defeated. He hated his metal-based maxillary partial and felt so frustrated that he even mentioned wanting a refund. Instead of brushing off his worries or rushing through the visit, I took the time to really listen. I asked him to show me what bothered him, where it felt bulky under his lip, and where the metal was rubbing and creating a sore spot. Once I clearly understood his concerns, I asked if I could try making some minor adjustments to help improve the fit.

As soon as I began working on it, I could feel his hope slowly returning. And when I was done, the change in his expression was unforgettable. He kept saying how different it felt and how grateful he was that I didn’t give up on him. He even told me he could tell I truly enjoy what I do. Hearing that meant so much, because moments like this reflect the heart behind my work more than anything else. To have a patient feel that I care, and to be able to make a difference right in front of them, is something incredibly beautiful. It reminded me why I continue to push forward in school, study late at night, and give everything I have to this profession.

I am so grateful for the growth I’ve experienced because of my patients. Every appointment is a chance to learn, to help someone feel better, and to keep improving as both a student and a future hygienist. My years as a dental assistant have shaped me into someone who values empathy, patience, and communication deeply, and I know these qualities will guide me as I enter the next phase of my career. I cannot wait to keep helping people and to inspire others just as much as they inspire me—one appointment at a time.
