Erin Gresham, Registered Dental Hygienist

Throughout my career in dentistry, I've had the privilege of working alongside many talented and dedicated professionals. But every once in a while, someone comes along who truly stands apart. For me, that person is Erin Gresham.
It is with tremendous pride and heartfelt appreciation that I nominate Erin for the Heart to Hands Award. She embodies everything that makes our profession so special: compassion, perseverance, clinical excellence, an unwavering commitment to learning, and a genuine love for the people she serves.
Erin has been a treasured member of our dental family for many years. During that time, I've come to admire not only her exceptional abilities as a dental hygienist, but also the remarkable person she is.
I affectionately nicknamed Erin "The Energizer Bunny," and anyone who has worked alongside her understands exactly why. Her energy and enthusiasm seem almost limitless. She approaches each day with a level of passion and determination that is truly inspiring. Whether she's caring for patients, collaborating with teammates, or learning something new, Erin gives everything she has.
One of the qualities I admire most about Erin is her insatiable desire to learn. She is never content to simply rely on what she already knows. She continually seeks out new information, techniques, and advancements in dental hygiene, always looking for ways to improve the care she provides. Her commitment to continuing education goes far beyond fulfilling professional requirements. She genuinely loves learning, and that enthusiasm is driven by one simple motivation: she wants to provide the absolute best care possible for her patients.
But as impressive as Erin's professional dedication is, what makes her truly extraordinary is her heart.
Recently, Erin shared an experience that I believe captures the essence of who she is better than anything I could say about her.
One of her longtime patients, who has no family, approached Erin with an extraordinary request. This patient asked Erin if she would consider becoming their conservator, entrusting her with an incredibly personal and significant responsibility.
Think about what that means.
Of all the people this patient has encountered throughout life, they felt such a profound sense of closeness, trust, and security with their dental hygienist that they wanted Erin to be the person they could depend upon when they might no longer be able to care for themselves.
When Erin told me about this request, she was moved to tears. Not because of the responsibility or the recognition, but because she was so deeply humbled that someone would place that level of trust in her.
That moment says more about Erin than any professional accomplishment or award ever could.
It reminds us that the relationships we develop with our patients can extend far beyond the dental chair. We may see our patients for only a few hours each year, but the compassion, kindness, and genuine interest we show them can have a profound and lasting impact.
For this particular patient, Erin had become much more than a healthcare provider. She had become someone who felt like family.
I cannot imagine a greater testament to the heart of a healthcare professional than having a patient with no family choose you as the person they trust most.
Erin's story is also one of remarkable perseverance.
Over the years, she has faced significant physical setbacks that have challenged her both personally and professionally. These difficulties required her to spend time away from the work and patients she loves.
What touched me most during those difficult times was how desperately Erin wanted to return to caring for her patients. Even while dealing with her own physical struggles, her thoughts were on the people she missed and her desire to get back to them as quickly as possible.
For Erin, dental hygiene has never been just a job. It is a calling.
Watching her navigate adversity has only deepened my admiration for her. Physical challenges may have temporarily slowed down our Energizer Bunny, but they have never diminished her spirit, her determination, or her passion for helping others.
As a dentist and practice owner, I place tremendous value on clinical excellence, professionalism, and lifelong learning. But after many years in dentistry, I've come to appreciate that the most exceptional healthcare professionals bring something even more important to their work: a genuine desire to make a positive difference in the lives of others.
Erin possesses that quality in abundance.
She reminds our entire team that dentistry is about much more than the procedures we perform. It's about listening, encouraging, educating, building trust, and treating every patient with kindness and dignity. It's about recognizing that every person who sits in our chair has a story, and sometimes what they need most is simply to know that someone genuinely cares about them.
Erin makes our practice a better place simply by being part of it. Her enthusiasm inspires those around her, her dedication challenges us to continue growing professionally, and her resilience reminds us of the importance of perseverance.
But above all, her compassion reminds us why we entered healthcare in the first place.
The Heart to Hands Award recognizes the extraordinary connection between compassion and service. I cannot think of a more fitting example than Erin Gresham. Her skilled hands provide exceptional care, but it is her remarkable heart that makes her truly special.
I am incredibly grateful to have worked alongside Erin for so many years. She has earned my deepest respect not only for the outstanding hygienist she is, but for the kindness, strength, humility, and character she demonstrates every day.
It would mean a great deal to me to see Erin recognized for the countless ways she has touched the lives of her patients and enriched our dental practice.
And knowing Erin, I suspect that even after receiving such a wonderful honor, our Energizer Bunny would simply keep going, continuing to learn, grow, and make a difference in the lives of those fortunate enough to sit in her chair.
