What inspires me as a dental hygienist is the profound ability to impact not only the oral health of our patients but their overall well-being. Every day, I have the privilege of seeing firsthand how oral health is intrinsically connected to the rest of the body, and how, as dental professionals, we can make a real difference by addressing both the symptoms and the root causes of oral and systemic issues. This is the heart of what drives me: knowing that my work can directly contribute to a patient’s quality of life and long-term health.

One experience that particularly solidified my passion for this field was a case involving a patient with extensive decalcification on several teeth. These areas, if left untreated, were at risk of progressing into cavities, which would have required drilling and filling. Instead, through careful evaluation, patient education, and remineralization techniques such as fluoride varnishes and calcium phosphate products, we were able to remineralize 12 areas of decalcification and prevent the need for invasive treatments.

When I shared the results with my patient and saw the look of relief and gratitude on their face, it reinforced why I love what I do. It wasn’t just the clinical success, but the trust that was built throughout the process. By giving her options and helping her understand how her habits impacted her oral health, I was able to empower her to take control of her own care. This patient not only walked away with healthier teeth but with a renewed sense of confidence in her ability to maintain her oral health moving forward.

This moment exemplifies the rewarding nature of dental hygiene and why I am so passionate about my work. Having multiple tools and innovative approaches in my hygiene toolbox – from remineralization techniques to advanced diagnostic tools and technology – allows me to provide personalized, effective care for every patient. One tool that has been particularly impactful in my practice is Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT). This technology allows me to gently remove biofilm without causing discomfort, while also helping me detect areas that may need further intervention. It’s a non-invasive, highly effective treatment modality that aligns perfectly with my goal of preventing disease and preserving tooth structure.

Another valuable tool I incorporate into my treatment is laser bacterial reduction (LBR). By using a soft-tissue laser, I can reduce bacterial load in periodontal pockets and gum tissues, promoting faster healing and a more comfortable experience for the patient. This technology is particularly useful in helping to address the bacterial cause of periodontal disease, reducing inflammation, and improving overall oral health. The combination of GBT and laser bacterial reduction helps me to provide a higher level of care, targeting the bacteria that can lead to decay, gum disease, and systemic health issues.

Beyond direct patient care, I’m also deeply passionate about the oral-systemic link and how addressing the root causes of oral health issues can improve overall health. The evidence linking periodontal disease with systemic conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and even Alzheimer’s is undeniable. This is where I find real purpose in

my work. By educating my patients about the connection between their oral health and their overall health, I can help them make informed decisions that go beyond the dental chair.

One of the aspects of dental hygiene that excites me most is the opportunity to work with and support my colleagues in our shared mission to provide the highest standard of care. As a Hygiene Director at another practice, I’m able to foster a culture of continuous learning and improvement. By introducing new innovations, tools, and technologies like GBT and laser bacterial reduction, I’m not only elevating the care we provide to patients but also helping my team stay motivated and inspired. I thrive on helping other clinicians reignite their passion for clinical hygiene, just as I did when I first discovered the power of innovation in our field. When I see team members embracing new techniques or adopting a fresh perspective on patient care, it’s incredibly fulfilling.

Dental hygiene is much more than just cleaning teeth; it’s about improving lives. It’s about providing patients with options, helping them understand the value of prevention, and offering a comprehensive approach that addresses both immediate and long-term oral health needs. Whether it’s by applying remineralization treatments, using the latest technologies like GBT and laser bacterial reduction, or helping colleagues become more effective in their roles, my passion is rooted in the desire to make a difference. I am excited by the opportunity to continue learning, growing, and inspiring others while making an impact on the health of my patients and the future of our profession.
