My Passion for Dental Hygiene and Public Health

For the past six years, I have dedicated my career to dental hygiene, finding immense fulfillment in my role as a dental hygienist in public health. Months after graduating college, my journey began in a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) where I became their first ever dental hygienist. This was an experience that laid the foundation for my commitment to public health. Currently, I continue this work at another FQHC, where I strive to make a meaningful impact in the lives of my patients every day.

What drives my passion for dental hygiene is the opportunity to serve individuals and communities that often face barriers to quality oral health care. The challenges within public health, especially in dental care, are substantial. Many of my patients come from underserved backgrounds, lacking basic knowledge about oral hygiene and its importance. This gap in understanding motivates me to educate them on fundamental oral care practices, such as proper brushing and flossing techniques, the significance of regular dental visits, and how oral health connects to overall well-being.

A crucial aspect of my practice is checking vitals including blood pressure and pulse during every single dental visit. I believe that oral health cannot be separated from overall health. By routinely checking blood pressure, I not only ensure my patients' safety during procedures but also open conversations about their overall health. This approach reinforces the connection between oral hygiene and systemic health, allowing me to educate my patients about the importance of managing their blood pressure as part of their overall wellness. For instance, I once encountered a patient with a notably elevated pulse who had a history of a pacemaker and other heart conditions. I informed him of this finding and strongly encouraged him to consult with his cardiologist. During his six month recall appointment, he expressed gratitude for my intervention, revealing that he did consult with his cardiologist and was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation. Additionally, I have referred many patients with high blood pressure readings to their primary care provider for further evaluation and management. These experiences are a reminder of the importance of monitoring vital signs at every dental visit and the significant impact we can have on our patients’ health.

My love for dental hygiene is rooted in my commitment to making a difference. I find joy in helping my patients achieve healthier smiles, understanding that each person I serve represents a step toward a healthier community. My journey as a dental hygienist has not just been about treating teeth but about transforming lives through education and compassionate care. I am proud to contribute to the public health landscape, empowering individuals to take charge of their oral health and fostering a culture of preventive care that will help future generations. I can honestly say I love my career serving our marginalized populations as a public health dental hygienist. Every patient interaction is an opportunity to inspire change and that makes my work incredibly rewarding.
